Hello! I’m Sara
I’m an Italian-born Scientist, Mother, & Doula Living in Zurich
My passion for birth began long before I became a parent — rooted in a teenage dream of supporting women through one of life’s most powerful transitions. Though I chose to pursue a scientific path, deeply fascinated also by how life develops and works, the experience of becoming a mother transformed me in a way no textbook ever could.
My two very different births — one boarderline traumatic and one deeply healing — opened my eyes to the immense emotional and physical journey of pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. They taught me the value of informed choices, compassionate presence, and the strength that comes from feeling seen, supported, and in control. It was through these experiences that I found my way to doula work — not as a career shift, but as a calling.
As a doula, I bring a calm, empathetic presence, a listening ear, and a balance of evidence-based knowledge and emotional intuition.
My Approach & Values
I believe every birth is natural — whether it unfolds at home, in a birthing center, or in a hospital. What matters most is that the birthing person feels empowered, respected, and held. Over time, I have gathered a rich bundle of tools and practices that I love sharing with families: from gentle approaches for accompanying birth, like yoga, hypnobirthing, Dancing for Birth™, and the use of the TENS machine, to lactation foundations and NICU-informed support.
I’m also deeply passionate about listening to birth stories (listen to mine here) and would love to recommend you the best books and podcasts, if you want to immerse yourself in the wisdom of others’ journeys.
Alongside my ongoing research on the science of birth at the University Hospital Zurich, I hold space for a few families each year. My role is not to direct, but to walk beside you — offering support, advocacy, and information so you can feel respected, held, and confident in navigating this transformative rite of passage.
Every family’s needs are different, and support during pregnancy and birth is never one-size-fits-all.
I offer a flexible approach so you can choose what feels right for you and your journey.
For a limited time, I’m offering a special discount on the full package — we can discuss details during our complimentary “vibe-check” meeting.

Here to Support You Through All Your Questions…
Who is a doula?
The word doula comes from ancient Greek, meaning “woman who serves.” Historically, women in labor were supported by other experienced women from their community (mothers, sisters, friends), offering comfort, reassurance, and guidance, alongside midwives. Today, doulas continue this tradition by providing continuous, non-medical support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period.
It’s a modern role with ancient roots, grounded in the timeless value of caring for one another during birth.
What does a doula do?
A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period, based on experience and research. This can include birth preparation (support in making a personal birth wish), comfort measures, help with communication between the birthing person and medical staff, and guidance on coping strategies. Doulas do not perform medical tasks or make decisions for the family.
For me, the most important part is being that calm, steady presence so you never feel alone in the process.
Why hire a doula?
Research shows that continuous support from a doula is associated with better outcomes: shorter labors (40 min less in average), lower rates of c-sections (39% less), premature births, pain medication and interventions, higher success of breastfeeding and greater satisfaction with the birth experience. Doulas can also improve communication with care providers and help families feel more confident in making decisions.
Having a doula is like having a team-mate, always by your side. It is important to choose a person that you trust and with whom you feel at ease, trust your gut feeling and schedule vibe-checks before chosing the right doula for you!
How is a doula different from a midwife?
A midwife provides clinical care and is responsible for the medical safety of the birthing person and baby. A doula focuses entirely on non-medical support—comfort, information, and emotional reassurance—working alongside midwives, doctors, and nurses as part of the birth team.
I love working in partnership with midwives, knowing that while they care for the medical side, I can focus 100% on your comfort and emotional well-being.
Why is it important to explore non-pharmacological comfort measures?
Labor is unpredictable, and even if you plan to use an epidural or have a scheduled cesarean, labor can sometimes begin unexpectedly. Having knowledge of different comfort techniques (and knowing which ones might suit you best!) gives you a practical toolkit you can draw from in any situation.
This preparation can bring confidence, calmness, and a greater sense of control, helping you create a positive experience where you remain actively involved in your care.
What is a TENS machine and how is it useful for labor?
A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine is a small, battery-operated device that sends mild electrical impulses through pads placed on the lower back. These impulses can help manage pain, particularly if starting the use in early labor, by counteracting the contraction pain stimulus in the brain and encouraging the release of endorphins. It is safe, non-invasive, proven to be effective and can be used alongside other comfort measures. It is very popular in countries like Australia and the UK and it is been slowly introduced in Switzerland, where you can find it for rental.
I used it myself during labor and found it surprisingly helpful! I can show you how it works and help you decide if it’s right for you.
Does having a doula replace my partner’s role?
Absolutely not! A doula supports both the birthing person and their partner. This can include offering suggestions for comfort techniques, helping the partner feel confident in their role, and stepping in to give them breaks when needed.
I see my role as helping your partner shine, not replacing them—together we make a great team.
How do doulas help with informed decision-making?
Doulas receive professional training by national or international organization and provide evidence-based information about procedures, interventions, and comfort options so families can make choices that align with their values and needs. Research shows that feeling informed and involved in decisions is strongly linked to higher satisfaction with the birth experience.
In addition, my scientific background helps me guide families toward reliable information, so they can feel confident in every choice they make.
Will a doula be useful if I give birth by cesarean?
Yes. A doula can provide emotional support, explain what’s happening during the procedure, and help you prepare questions for your care team. Before and after surgery, a doula can assist with comfort measures, support your partner, and help with early bonding and feeding. In planned cesareans, doulas can also help you explore options for making the birth more personal, such as gentle and maternal-assisted cesarean practices.
I believe every birth can be meaningful and positive when you feel supported and informed.
What does birth look like in an hospital today?
About one in three births (~33%) in Switzerland is by cesarean section. Induction and epidural use are common, and around one in four women report experiencing some form of pressure or trauma during childbirth. While interventions are sometimes essential, they can also be unexpected.
I believe knowing what to expect, having someone by your side and feeling in charge of your decisions can make even unexpected situations feel more manageable and look back on the birth positively, however it may unfold.
What comfort measures can help during labor?
There are many ways to cope with contractions without (or in addition to) medication, and they can be adapted to your needs and preferences. These include using water or hydrotherapy (like showers or baths), focused breathing, vocalizing, visualization or meditation (as e.g. in hypnobirthing) massage, movement (dance even!) and position changes, and tools like a TENS machine.
As your doula, I can help you explore these options during pregnancy and guide you in using them effectively during labor.
